Demonstrating Language Proficiency

Please find below lists of approved language tests and other methods of demonstrating proficiency in English language, as well as further instructions on how and where you should submit documentation of your language skills. When applying to master’s or doctoral level studies, international applicants are required to demonstrate a good command of the English  language.

Score of 563 or higher

Only official TOEFL scores mailed directly from the TOEFL office are accepted. Please note that the test results are valid two (2) years from the test date. Older test results are not accepted.
TOEFL iBT
Score of 85 or higher

Only official TOEFL scores mailed directly from the TOEFL office are accepted. Please note that the test results are valid two (2) years from the test date. Older test results are not accepted.
IELTS Academic
Score of 6.5 or higher

Regarding IELTS Academic language tests, copies of the original certificate are also accepted. The score will be cross-checked with the data-base of the organiser of the test. Please note that the test results are valid two (2) years from the test date. Older test results are not accepted.
Pearson Test of English, PTE
Score of 58 or higher

Regarding PTE (Pearson Test of English Academic), scores will be verified via online score report website. Please note that the test results are valid two (2) years from the test date. Older test results are not accepted.
CPE
Pass level A, B or C

Copy of the Cambridge ESOL's Certificate of Proficiency in English (CPE). Authenticity of the documents will be cross-checked with the organiser of the test.
CAE
Pass level A, B or C

Copy of the Cambridge ESOL's Certificate in Advanced English (CAE). Authenticity of the documents will be cross-checked with the organiser of the test.
National Certificate of Language Proficiency 
Skill level 5 (average value)

National Certificate of English Language Proficiency by Finnish National Board of Education. Copies of the original certificate are accepted. Authenticity of the documents will be cross-checked with the organiser of the test.

 

Approved Methods of Demonstrating Language Proficiency

Secondary education in English in one of the Nordic Countries (Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, or Sweden), the Great Britain, Ireland, the USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand

Copy of upper secondary school certificate in original language from Finland, Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland, Great Britain, Ireland, USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand indicating that degree is conducted in English language. If original document is not issued in English, Finnish or Swedish, translation to one of the languages is also required

Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in English in one of the EU or EEA Countries, or in Australia, Canada, New Zealand or the USA

Copy of transcript of records of Bachelor's (or higher) degree in original language from EU/EEA country, or in USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand indicating that degree is conducted in English language. If original document is not issued in English, Finnish or Swedish, translation to one of the languages is also required.

English language as part of IB degree (A language), EB degree (LI language or LII language)

Copy of transcript of records from a higher education institution in Finland in Finnish, Swedish or English.


Note:

• Faculties may, under special circumstances, approve some other way of demonstrating language proficiency than what is defined above.

Submitting Language Proficiency Documents

APPLYING FOR MASTER'S DEGREE STUDIES

All language test results or other approved documents demonstrating language proficiency must be sent by the end of the application round closing date (January 31, 2013) to:

Please note that the testing centre must send the test results directly to University Admissions Finland by the application deadline. It is the applicant’s responsibility to make testing arrangements for her/himself.

  • When filling out the TOEFL Registration Form, please fill in University Admissions Finland’s Institution Code 3138 in the Score Report Recipient field.
  • The applicant should indicate in Section 23 of the IELTS registration form that University Admissions Finland is able to verify the score electronically. The testing centre will then make your IELTS score available to UAF.
