Faculty of Social Sciences
The Faculty of Social Sciences was established in 1982 and has an enrolment of approximately 1250 students. The Faculty has three departments; the Department of Social Studies, the Department of Social Work and the Department of Research Methodology. The Finnish Higher Education Evaluation Council (FINHEEC) has designated the department of social work as a centre of exellence in university education for years 2010 - 2012.
The Faculty of Social Sciences provides education and undertakes research in eight different fields: administrative science, applied psychology, international relations, political science, public law, rehabilitation science, social work and sociology. The strategic focus is on welfare, political phenomena and the applications of information technologies in social sciences. Research is focused on themes related to diverse aspects of society, especially northern society.
The Faculty of Social Sciences offers courses also in the following minor subject studies: Environmental studies, International law, Social Gerontology, Social policy.
