The EUCEN 2010 Conference is organized at the University of Lapland (address: Yliopistonkatu 8) located about two kilometres from the city centre (15-20 minutes by foot). You will find the Rovaniemi Map here.

Rovaniemi – the heart of Lapland
Rovaniemi is the capital of Lapland with 58 000 inhabitants. It is an international city located at the point where the rivers Kemijoki and Ounasjoki meet. Rovaniemi is a university city, the commercial centre for the area and a city of sport and culture. Rovaniemi consists also of dozens of village centres that are spread out along both sides of the Arctic Circle along the banks of two of the largest rivers in Finland - the Rivers Kemijoki and Ounasjoki.
Travelling to Rovaniemi
There are frequent flights to Helsinki, the capital of Finland, from many European countries as well as from overseas countries. Rovaniemi has developed into one of the main centres for traffic to the arctic region to which thousands of people who thirst for adventure fly from all over the world each year. The connections for all other forms of transport are very good. Finnair flies from Helsinki to Rovaniemi in May four times a day. VR, the national railway, operates five trains a day.
The Rovaniemi Airport is located about 8 km from the city centre. The railway station is located ca. 1.5 km from the city centre. No organised transportation is provided from the airport/train station to the hotels or the conference venue.
Airport – City Centre
Airport Express – bus from Airport to the city centre and back – drives to all the centre hotels as well as the bus station, ca. 15 minutes, price 5 €/ person. Airport Express departs from the airport after every flight arrival. Check your hotel reception about the pick-up time from your hotel back to the airport. The following bus transfers will be provided by the conference organizer:
- from conference venue to Arktikum and Rovala, after Newcomers Meeting, on Thursday 27 May
- from the conference hotels to the dinner venue on Friday 28 May and back to hotels after dinner
Time and weather in Finland
Finland ’s time zone is GMT + 2 hours. At the end of May the summer is just starting in Lapland. Around midsummer in Northern Finland the sun does not set for several weeks. The “nightless night” lasts in Rovaniemi for one month, beginning on June 6th and ending on July 7th. The hotel rooms are equipped with blackout curtains.
Weather forecast is difficult. While the average May/June temperature in Rovaniemi is +15 degree centigrade, it may vary from +8 to +20 degrees. We advice you to come prepared for cold as well as warm weather.
