 MarcusSpechtPieni.jpg Professor Marcus Specht, Open University of the Netherlands

Prof. Dr. Marcus Specht is Professor for Advanced Learning Technologies at Centre for Learning Sciences and Technologies at the Open University of the Netherlands and director of the Learning Innovation Labs. He received his Diploma in Psychology in 1995 and a Dissertation from the University of Trier in 1998 on adaptive information technology. From 1998 until 2001 he worked as senior researcher at the GMD research center on HCI and mobile information technology. From 2001 he headed the department "Mobile Knowledge" at the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology (FIT). He is currently involved in several national and international research projects on competence based lifelong learning, personalized information support and contextualized and mobile learning. His research focus is on Mobile and Contextualized Learning Technologies, Learning Network Services, and Social and Immersive Media for Learning. Prof. Specht is a am member of ACM, IEEE, the SIKS (http://www.siks.nl) ))))))and ICO (http://marcuspecht.de/blog28/www.ou.nl/ico) research schools in the Netherlands and is an Apple Distinguished Educator.

Presentation title: Teaching a global class of 60 000 students: Designing and surviving a MOOC – Some Things I have Learned.

Dr. Keith Devlin is a co-founder and Executive Director of the university's  H-STAR institute, a co-founder of the Stanford Media X research network, and a Senior Researcher at CSLI. He is a World Economic Forum Fellow and a Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. His current research is focused on the use of different media to teach and communicate mathematics to diverse audiences. He also works on the design of information/reasoning systems for intelligence analysis. Other research interests include: theory of information, models of reasoning, applications of mathematical techniques in the study of communication, and mathematical cognition. He has written 32 books and over 80 published research articles. Recipient of the Pythagoras Prize, the Peano Prize, the Carl Sagan Award, and the Joint Policy Board for Mathematics Communications Award. In 2003, he was recognized by the California State Assembly for his "innovative work and longtime service in the field of mathematics and its relation to logic and linguistics." He is "the Math Guy" on National Public Radio.
   
 SandiFeasterPieni2.jpg Assistant Dean, Sandi Feaster, Stanford University, School of Medicine (CISL), Director, Goodman Immersive Learning Center, USA

Presentation title: Immersive and simulation-based learning, how and why to use various techniques for various learner populations

Ms. Feaster is the Assistant Dean for Immersive and Simulation-based Learning and the Director for the 28,000 square foot Goodman Immersive Learning Center in the Li-Ka Shing Center for Learning and Knowledge at Stanford University School of Medicine in California. She is responsible for facilitating collaboration and coordination of simulation activities throughout the Stanford School of Medicine (there are 5 free-standing facilities as well as several hospital-based programs). She is active in the Society for Simulation in Healthcare as vice-chair of the Public Affairs and Government Relations Committee as well as the co-chair for the Administration and Management Committee of the American College of Surgery Accredited Education Institutes. Ms. Feaster has held positions in clinical research, marketing, product management and government affairs in several medical device and medical service companies. She has also been instrumental in implementing process redesign activities in two Children’s Hospitals in addition to her clinical work as a pediatric intensive care nurse. She holds a Master’s Degree in Nursing and a Masters in Business Administration, and has completed course work in LEAN and Six Sigma at the black belt level.
