Premises

The University of Lapland operates in modern premises in Rovaniemi. The Main Building is located on a lakeside campus in the Rovaniemi district called Rantavitikka within walking distance of the centre of the town. University’s Arctic Center, the unit of Education and Development Services as well as Teacher Training School lie outside the campus area but are also convenient to the city centre and main campus.

The University Main Building was designed by Architecht, Professor Juhani Katainen. The main building was constructed in two phases. The 1st phase was completed in 1987 and the 2nd phase was inaugurated in 1992. The first enlargement of the main building was completed in September 2000 and the second enlargement in August 2006.

All the faculties as well as main library, art library and administration services are in the main building.

The Arktikum House was designed by a group of three Danish architects: Soren Birch, Ellen Waade and Claus Bonderup. The first phase of the Arktikum was opened to the public on the Finnish Independence Day, the 6th of December, 1992. The second phase called the Institute was completed in September 1997. The second phase was partially financed by the European Union.

University’s Arctic Centre is located in the Arktikum House.

The Teacher Training School lies close to the city centre. The school building was completely reconstructed and renovated during the year 2000. The school hosts some 370 pupils from the pre-primary school to the 6th grade. Architect: Jan Lehtipalo.
