Faculty-Specific Admission Requirements for Master’s Degree Studies 

Please consult the information provided by each faculty regarding their master’s degree programs open to international applicants and the study places available.

Faculty of Art and Design 

Degree programmes which offer master’s degree studies for international applicants at the Faculty of Art and Design are:

Clothing Design (max. 5 students)
EMACIM European Master in Arts, Culture and International Management (max. 15 students)
• Graphic Design (max. 5 students)
• Industrial Design (max. 5 students)
Interior and Textile Design (max. 5 students)

Eligibility criteria

EMACIM European Masters in Arts, Culture and International Management

• BA or equivalent degree in relevant field of study in media, design, culture, communication, art, music, dance or theatre for the major in audiovisual media culture
• a good command of English language.

Eligibility criteria to other Art and Design degree programmes (Clothing Design, Graphic Design, Industrial Design and Interior and Textile Design)

• a BA level degree in a relevant field of study and
• a good command of English and/or Finnish language.

Only those applications which fulfil these requirements will be evaluated. International students are accepted to study in the same programme as the Finnish students, and parts of their studies are independent and tailor-made so that they can complete the studies in English.

In addition to meeting the general education background and language requirements, student selection is based on the applicant’s previous degree, portfolio, and motivation letter.

The portfolio consists of design projects related to the applicant’s area of education and artistic activities (5-10 design projects). The design projects must be presented as paper prints, photographs, or in digital format. The design projects should include the following information: project name, a short description of the project’s content, purpose, and method of realization, and the production year. At least one of the design projects must be accompanied with a presentation of the entire development process from draft to final product. A Curriculum-vitae (CV) must also be included in the portfolio.

The motivation letter should illustrate the applicant’s interests in the field and education, the reasons why the applicant applies to the University of Lapland and the applicant’s expectations regarding the education.

***All application documents should be sent to the University Admissions Finland’s mailing address except for the portfolio which is to be submitted directly to the Faculty of Art and Design.


Faculty of Social Siences

Degree programmes which offer master’s degree studies for international applicants at the Faculty of Social Sciences are:

• Global Biopolitics (max. 10 students) 
EMACIM European Master in Arts, Culture and International Management (max. 10 students)



Eligibility criteria

Global Biopolitics

General eligibility requirements to apply for master's degree studies at the Faculty of Social Sciences in Global Biopolitics are 

• Bachelor's degree (180 ECTS)  in the field of social sciences or in the relevant field of humanities
• a good command of English language.

Only those applications which fulfil these requirements will be evaluated.

EMACIM European Masters in Arts, Culture and International Management

• BA or equivalent degree in relevant field of study in tourism studies or in tourism-related field for the major in tourism research
• a good command of English language

In addition the applicants are required to submit an essay based on the required reading. See further information at www.ulapland.fi/emacim - Eligibility and Admission Criteria.

Previous degree may have to be supplemented with, for example, language, methodological or major subject studies. This will be agreed upon in the personal study plan of a student.

The faculty’s decision to offer a study place is based on the availability of resources. Priority will be given to those applicants who have completed their studies with excellent marks. Faculty of Education

Degree programmes which offer master’s degree studies for international applicants at the Faculty of Education are:

• Media Education  (max. 10 students)

Eligibility criteria

The faculty’s decision to offer a study place is based on three factors:

a) The applicant must have a prior degree (bachelor’s or master’s) or equivalent education in a relevant field of study; with applicants who have completed their prior degree in media education will be given first priority.

b) The applicant’s educational background, i.e. level of degree obtained and accomplishments, and marks/grades received on studies completed.

c) The contents of the applicant’s letter of motivation must state the grounds for the applicant’s interest in education, expectations for these studies, and the special merits supporting one’s selection. Note: the letter of motivation must be written in English.
