Demonstrating Language Proficiency

Please find below lists of approved language tests and other methods of demonstrating proficiency in English language, as well as further instructions on how and where you should submit documentation of your language skills. When applying to master’s or doctoral level studies, international applicants are required to demonstrate a good command of the English  language.

If original document is not issued in English, Finnish or Swedish, translation to one of the languages is also required.

Copy of transcript of records of Bachelor's (or higher) degree in original language from EU/EEA country, or in USA, Canada, Australia or New Zealand indicating that degree is conducted in English language. If original document is not issued in English, Finnish or Swedish, translation to one of the languages is also required.

English language as part of IB degree (A language), EB degree (LI language or LII language)


An International Baccalaureate with English as the A1 language with an approved grade (a minimum grade of 2)

Submitting Language Proficiency Documents

APPLYING FOR MASTER'S DEGREE STUDIES

All language test results must arrive at University Admissions Finland by the application deadline (see Admissions - Master's degree studies -page). It is always the applicant’s responsibility to make testing arrangements for her/himself and to make sure the test results are delivered on time. Be advised that it may take several weeks before the test results are published, and thus we recommend you to book your test well in advance.

Be prepared that after taking a language test, it may take several weeks before the test results are published.

Please see also the University Admissions Finland information on Language tests and documentation to find out specific information for example on how to send the test results to UAF.


  • When requesting the TOEFL test centre to forward your results to us, please fill in the University Admissions Finland’s Institution Code 3138 in the Score Report Recipient field. The testing centre must send the score slip or its electronic equivalent directly to University Admissions Finland. Please note that test results sent by the applicant will not be accepted. After you have been informed of the test score, it takes approximately three weeks for the test result to reach University Admissions Finland.
  • For the IELTS Academic test, It usually takes at least 13 days for the results to be published after you have taken the test. Copies of the original certificate are also accepted. The score will be cross-checked with the data-base of the organizer of the test.
  • Test results for PTE Academic are typically available within 5 working days following the test session. Once you receive your test score send it to University Admissions Finland from your PTE account. Choose Finland as the ‘Country’, ‘University Admissions Finland’ as the ‘Institution’ and click ‘Search’. Then select the university you want to send your results to and confirm your order. After this, UAF should have access to your test results within 48 hours. Be advised that online language test results will only be accepted from the test organiser.
  • For CAE and CPE, please address the test results to University Admissions Finland. An applicant's copy of the test score is acceptable, as your results will be verified from the test organiser. Include your Candidate's ID (3 letters and 6 numbers) and secret code (4 numbers), if applicable (available for tests taken after 2005). If you do not have these codes, you can request them from the testing organisation. If the codes are unavailable, you should ask for the Statement of Results from Cambridge ESOL to be sent directly to University Admissions Finland. Test scores sent as email attachments will not be accepted.
  • For National Certificate of English Language Proficiency and Civil Service Language Proficiency Tests, copies of the original certificate are accepted. Authenticity of the documents will be cross-checked with the organiser of the test.

If you are applying to more than one programme and you wish to verify your language skills to all of them with the same language test, University Admissions Finland needs to receive the test results only once.

If you submitted a language test result during one of the previous application periods, UAF still has record of your test result. If the previously submitted language test was taken prior to May 2011 and you wish to use it, you need to contact UAF. Remember to check the time limitations for language tests.


Please note that the test result must be valid throughout the application period. This means it must not expire prior to the application deadline. Also note that the language skill requirements may have changed from the previous application periods.

University Admissions Finland does not accept documents submitted by email or fax. Please note that University Admissions Finland does not return any documents.
