Danica Jovanovic, graduate of Media Education, Serbia

The decision to come to study at the University of Lapland was a result of several factors. Firstly, the university was the only one in Finland which offered the master’s degree program in Media Education; secondly, the program seemed to be very well planned and organized; and last but not least, the Finnish educational system is famous for being unique when it comes to teaching and studying principles, and University of Lapland for being a relaxed place for educational development. I was very happy to have the opportunity to enroll in this particular program because it deals with media literacy. This subject is an integral part of modern information society, and it has always been my area of interest.

"I would say that this flexible and relaxed way of studying is the best feature of studying at the University of Lapland."

Studying at ULapland has been a unique experience. There is a certain amount of courses which are compulsory for this degree program, while all the other courses offered by other faculties are available for the students if they wish to participate in them. I would say that this flexible and relaxed way of studying is the best feature of studying at the University of Lapland. What is more, professors are very friendly and easily approachable, which made my studying experience pleasant and enjoyable.

I have always wanted to pursue an academic career. While studying, I had a chance to work at ULapland for a couple of months at the Language Centre. By doing so, I was a teacher and a student at the same time. Studying here helped me to fulfil my academic plans at the time and to successfully continue from that point after graduation. I am currently working as a language editor, but I would like to continue working as a researcher in the near future.

"Although the winter in Lapland can be quite a challenge, it gives you a possibility to experience something new and even to grow stronger."

I strongly recommend this university to anyone who wants to experience studying from the unique perspective and in the unique location. It is free of charge, the focus is on individual student work, there is a possibility to complete courses in different ways, and there is no pressure. Also, Rovaniemi is a very quiet place, and the nature is absolutely amazing: lots of forests, multicolored sky (especially in winter), and beautiful lakes. Although the winter in Lapland can be quite a challenge, it gives you a possibility to experience something new and even to grow stronger. And if you haven’t yet experienced the midnight sun during the summer, Lapland is the place to come and see it!
