Jens Claus, exchange student in Industrial Design, the Netherlands

I chose Finland and the University of Lapland because I preferred to go to Northern Europe as I was already familiar with Southern Europe. For me the North was something fresh and extreme. I like the fact that things are well organized here. I also wanted to study in a university which could offer courses in English.

"The university is smaller which makes it more personal: here professors know your name, whereas at my home university I’m just a number."

When it comes to studies I like the approach here – it’s more practical as you do things with your hands. The classes are more art-oriented as we have classes together with fine art students. At my home university I have only classes in industrial design. The university is smaller which makes it more personal: here professors know your name, whereas at my home university I’m just a number. I like the attitude of teachers because they help you to pass the course. One of my favourite things is the university’s cafeteria where the food is delicious.

"I enjoy living around trees and having a cup of coffee at my balcony in the mornings."

Finnish people are not as quiet as I thought but they are not too loud either. It’s great that here people still trust each. In the beginning the quietness was shocking but now I’m used to it. In fact, I enjoy living around trees and having a cup of coffee at my balcony in the mornings. On my free time I like cooking with my flatmate and going out in the nature.
