Miho & Kumiko, exchange students in Industrial Design, Japan

Our teacher gave us lectures in Finnish product and clothing design and we have been interested in Finnish design ever since. Our teacher also encouraged us to come to Finland.

"One of the best things in the University of Lapland is the high-quality equipment. It’s also great that students can display their artwork freely."

We have had many interesting workshops and we have tried many new things, for instance, fire sculpting and felting. One of the best things in the University of Lapland is the high-quality equipment. In our home university we have good machines but not as many as here. It’s also great that students can display their artwork freely.

Our home university, Yamaguchi, is also located in the countryside, so coming to Rovaniemi wasn’t that shocking. The nature is very beautiful and the sky is so clear. We also think that Japanese and Finnish people are similar – silent and shy. The bright summer nights were amazing and something we had never experienced.

"International experience is highly valued in Japan so we will gain a lot from this experience."

In the future, we would like to be product designers. International experience is highly valued in Japan so we will gain a lot from this experience. When Japanese companies are considering expanding, they need people with international knowledge and language skills.
