DEGREE STUDENTS

Before you can start your studies you must officially let us know whether you accept your study place. Register at the university by following the steps below:

1. ACCEPTING YOUR STUDY PLACE

Accept your study place sending the notice of consent (which is enclosed in your letter of acceptance) to Student Services of the University of Lapland by 10 June 2016.

2. REGISTRATION FOR ATTENDANCE AT THE UNIVERSITY

Register at the university as an attending or a non-attending student by returning the new students’ registration form for the academic year 2016–2017 and the receipt showing that you have paid the Student Union membership fee, preferably all at the same time. You may deliver the documents together with the notice of consent (step 1), or at the latest when the registration period expires on 28 July 2016.

We recommend that you start your studies on the first term (autumn semester). You should then register as an attending student for the whole academic year from 1 August 2016 to 31 July 2017 (This information will be asked also in the residence permit application as well.)

According to the Universities Act/Polytechnics Act, a first-year student may register as absent for the academic year for the following reasons only:
1) service under the Conscription Act (1438/2007), Non-Military Service Act (1446/2007), or Act on Women's Voluntary Military Service (194/1995);
2) maternity, paternity or parental leave;
3) the student cannot begin studies due to being incapacitated by personal illness or injury.

In order to register as non-attending you must present documents proving the legal grounds for your absence and register as a non-attending student for the whole academic year or for one semester (autumn semester 1 August 2016 – 31 December 2016, spring semester 1 January 2017 – 31 July 2017). For example, if you plan to start your studies in spring, you must register as a non-attending student for the autumn semester and as an attending student for the spring semester.

For detailed information on the academic year and teaching periods, click here.

Remember also to pay the Student Union membership fee for the semester(s) you will attend (see information below). If you register as a non-attending student, you are not allowed to join the Student Union, and therefore will not be entitled to the benefits of the Student Union.

Student Union and paying the membership fee

The Student Union is a public corporation designed to support the students’ rights and to make sure that the students’ voice is heard everywhere at the university and in the surrounding society.

All BA and MA students are automatically members of the Student Union and have to pay the membership fee before registering (Universities Act (558/2009/39).

The Student Union membership fee in the Academic year 2016-2017 is 105 €.

For exchange and PhD students the membership is voluntary. Visiting and postgraduate students do not have to pay the membership fee, unless they want to have the Finnish student card. Visiting and postgraduate students are not entitled to the Student Union benefits but they are nevertheless entitled to counselling and services of the Student Union.

Please note that you need to pay the Student Union membership fee before registering(i.e. by 28 July 2016) and return the receipt with the registration form.
