Before you can start your studies you must officially let us know whether you accept your study place. Register at the university by doing the following:
1. ACCEPTING YOUR STUDY PLACE
Accept your study place sending the notice of consent (which is enclosed in your letter of acceptance) to Student Services of the University of Lapland
by Tuesday July 31st 2012.
2. REGISTRATION FOR ATTENDANCE AT THE UNIVERSITY
Register at the university as
attending or
non-attending student by returning the following documents, preferably all at the same time. We recommend that you start your studies on the first term. However, you may
postpone the beginning of your studies by registering as a non-attending
student for the whole academic year or for one semester (see also below chapter 3.).
You may deliver the documents together with the notice of consent (step 1), or at the latest
when the registration period expires on July 31st 2012.
The documents to be delivered are as follows:
- New students’ registration form for the academic year 2012 – 2013.
- Receipt showing that you have paid the Student Union membership fee – 90€
You can pay the
Student Union membership fee (for the full Academic Year 2012-2013 90€; for the Autumn semester 45,40€ and for the Spring semester 47€) to
Lapin yliopiston ylioppilaskunta through a bank transfer.

Should you deliver these documents after the notice of consent (step
1), you must send them directly to the Student Services.

The regulations concerning student registration are based on the
Universities Decree (155/1998). It states that a student who fails to
register during the registration period will lose his/her right to
study. To reclaim the right to study the student must pay a
re-registration fee of 35 euros. Re-registration issues are handled at
the Student Services.
Upon your arrival (after you have accepted your study place and registered as an attending student), you will receive from the Student Services
- a certificate for getting student reductions on railway and bus tickets (VR and Matkahuolto)
- your Study Certificate. Before receiving your
student card the Study Certificate which entitles you to a student reduction on meals
served in the cafeterias of the University of Lapland.
Student Union of University of Lapland (LYY)
Student Union is a public corporation designed to support the students’ rights and to make sure that the students’ voice is heard everywhere at the university and in the surrounding society.
All BA and MA -students are automatically members of the Student Union and have to pay the membership fee (90 € in 2012-2013, 45,5€ for autumn semester, 47 € for spring semester) before registering (Universities Act (645/97/40).
Please note that you need to pay the Student Union membership fee before registering
by July 31st 2012 at the latest and return the receipt with the registration form.
After paying the fee, the student receives the official
student card and is entitled to many
benefits such as
- subsidised lunches in University restaurants,
- services of the Finnish Student Health Care Service (YTHS),
- services provided by the Student Union,
- possibility to obtain Student Sport Pass,
- discounts on train tickets and long distance bus tickets
- discounts at youth hostels, museums, theatres, concerts, swimming pools, shops, ski resorts, restaurants, etc.

Visiting and postgraduate students do not have to pay the membership fee, unless they want to have the Finnish student card. Visiting and postgraduate students are not entitled to earlier mentioned benefits but are entitled to counselling and services of the Student Union.
3. POSTPONING THE START OF YOUR STUDIES
We recommend that you start your studies on the first term. However, you may
postpone the beginning of your studies by registering as a non-attending
student for the whole academic year or for one semester.
If you are unable to start your studies due to military service, non-military service, or parental leave, please deliver a corresponding certificate to the Student Services. If you have registered as a non-attending student, you are not allowed to join the Student Union.
Before you can start your studies you must officially let us know
whether you accept your study place. Register at the university by
doing the following:
1. CONFIRMING THE STUDY PLACE
Please confirm your exchange study place through SoleMoveby 15th of August 2012 / 12th of December 2012 at the latest!
2. REGISTRATION FOR EXCHANGE STUDENTS
Plesae send by email to international.relations(at)ulapland.fi or fax the Registration Form to the International Relations Office by 15nd of August 2012 / 12th of December 2012 at the latest!
If you haven’t sent your Registration Form by this date, your ICT user account is not ready in orientation week and you won´t be able to register for the courses. In this case it will take few weeks after your arrival.
