An Academic Year at the University of Lapland

The academic year at the University of Lapland is comprised of two semesters. The autumn semester is from August 1 to December 31, and the spring semester is from January 1 to July 31. The annual opening ceremony is always held on the first Monday in September.

Teaching during the academic year is divided in five teaching periods.

Please note that teaching periods are not the same as the University Academic Year.

Please see the dates below. Apart from specific / pre-arranged "Summer School" studies, there is no teaching offered at the university during the summer (i.e. from June 1st to September 1st).

Recommended Arrival Date


It is highly recommended that students arrive at the beginning of each semester in order to participate in the orientation programme.
