UHI project 1 January 2001 – 31 December 2001

The Centre for Media Pedagogy has acted as a co-operative partner with the University of Highlands and Islands (UHI) project from Scotland. Scotland functioned as the project’s responsible co-ordinator and the second partner outside Scotland was the Open University of Catalonia in Spain.

The task of the UHI project was to create a dispersed virtual university that is based on co-operation among local teaching institutions. The network’s area covers approximately 500,000 residents. The goal was to expand and facilitate entry into higher education, also in isolated areas, through the support and intercession of various co-operating partners. Another objective was to develop and apply new approaches to teaching and learning utilising information and communication technologies.

The Centre for Media Pedagogy’s participation in the project also focused on the translation of the UHI project’s final Best Practice Guidelines report from English to Finnish, the mutual exchange of expertise during the visit, as well as the exploration of further avenues of co-operation in our research and development areas.

The UHI project participated in ADAPT-LINC projects (EU, 2000/04-2001/06), in which the foreign partners were:

  • UOC, Universitat Oberta de Catalunya, Barcelona, Spain
  • UOL, University of Lapland, Rovaniemi, Finland
