Introduction to semiotics from University of Tartu

The preparatory module at University of Tartu (Tartu) consists of 30 ECTS with two types of courses being offered to students:


            1. Online Introductory Courses – 12 ECTS


  • History of Semiotics (3 ECTS)
  • Theory of Semiotics 1: Difference-Sign-Sign Systems (3 ECTS)
  • Theory of Semiotics 2: Text-Communication-Semiosphere (3 ECTS)
  • Application of Semiotics (3 ECTS)


           2. Selective Courses for Deepening and Contextualizing  Semiotic Knowledge – 18 ECTS


  • Methodology of Semiotic Analysis (6 ECTS)
  • Tartu-Moscow Semiotic School (6 ECTS)
  • Cultural Semiotics and Theories of Culture (6 ECTS)
  • Sociosemiotics and Societal Theories (6 ECTS)
  • Ecosemiotics: Cultural Interpretations of Nature (6 ECTS)


This study module is offered as an extra curriculum training programme by Tartu’s Semiotics Department. In addition, courses are open for partial participation and integration with a student’s regular studies at the university. There are no restrictions for participation, yet the admission conditions can include a fee – contact Tartu’s Semiotics Department for more information.
