WLAN of University of Lapland
University of Lapland has a wireless local area network (WLAN) which can be used by Students/Staff/Guests on studying purposes at the campus area. To use the network a laptop or another portable device is needed. You also need a university user account. The laptop used needs to have a wireless network adapter that has support for IEEE 802.11b and -g standards. It also has to support WPA-encryption. For further information please contact HelpDesk.
WLAN is available at Yliopistonkatu 8, Siljotie 2, Hallituskatu 20, Laajakaista 3, Harjoittelukoulu (Pohjolankatu 23) Arctic Centre (Pohjoisranta 4)
Each user group has SSID name of their own (Eduroam, luc, Guest)
New wireless network (WLAN) at the university
The University of Lapland will have the following wireless networks for three user groups using mobile devices (laptops, tablets, and mobile phones):
• Eduroam wireless network: for students and personnel using their own devices and for other users of Eduroam
• Guest wireless network: for guests using their own devices
• LUC wireless network: for personnel automatically when using university devices (laptops and tablets maintained by the university, excluding phones).
Students will use the Eduroam wireless network
The wireless network used previously by students was terminated on 22 September 2013. The subsequent changeover will be made phase by phase on the main campus and the satellites (Pöykkölä, Siljotie, Vilhontalo, and Training School). As a visible change, the name of the Student network will disappear from the list of WLANs.
After the change, students log into the Eduroam wireless network. The functions remain the same: there will be an Internet connection as well as printing and disk services.
Students of the University of Lapland enter the username as follows:
käyttäjätunnus@luc.fi for example email@example.com , from other Finnish organizations as follows: käyttäjätunnus@kotiorganisaatio.fi esim. firstname.lastname@example.org
Personnel will log into the LUC wireless network automatically with devices maintained by the ICT unit
Personnel of the University of Lapland with university mobile devices use the LUC wireless network. They log automatically into the LUC wireless network and get the same services as in the fixed network: an Internet connection, printing and disk services, and data systems.
The personnel of the University of Lapland is able to use luc wlan as well in the Rovaniemen ammattikorkeakoulu , University of Appplied Sciencies and Kemi.- Tornionlaakson Municipal Education and Training Consortium Lappia
Personnel can log into the Eduroam wireless network with their own mobile devices and university phones
The personnel can log into the Eduroam wireless network using their own devices (laptops, tablets, and phones) as well as university phones. In this case, the only service provided is an Internet connection.
The personnel of the University of Lapland enter the username as follows:

Wireless network and the personnel’s Mac users
At the moment, the personnel’s Mac devices do not automatically log into the LUC wireless network. Therefore, Mac users must log into the Eduroam wireless network, which provides an Internet connection. Using the fixed network, Mac users have access to all network services (an Internet connection, printing and disk services, and data systems).
Guests will use the Guest wireless network
Guests will log into the
university’s Guest wireless network. The login requires an encryption
key (WiFi Protected Access – Pre Shared Key), available at the ICT Servicedesk and Helpdesk, located on the main
campus: Yliopistonkatu 8, D-wing, 1st floor (opposite to Café Lovisa).
If needed, the ICT Servicedesk and Helpdesk will assist in the login

The users of the wireless network should take care of security way of usage: they have to use secure point-to-point connections when using services containing confidential data (e.g. ssl-secured connection, vpn-connections) .
