Selection criteria and applying

The right to study for a licentiate’s or doctor’s degree can be granted to a person who has a Master’s degree or a corresponding Finnish or foreign degree and who has completed advanced studies or corresponding studies in the major subject of the postgraduate degree that the person is applying for.

You must deliver a written application to the faculty to obtain the right to complete a licentiate's or doctor's degree. Use the accompanying form to apply for the right to study for a postgraduate degree.  Attach to the application a certified copy of the degree certificate and transcript of records, a research plan and other required documents mentioned in the selection criteria.

You can apply for a postgraduate study right in the Faculty of Social Sciences during an application period that is arranged twice a year – in April and in November.

When applying for a postgraduate study right, use the application form available on this website. Deliver the application form to the faculty office / chief of administration (P.O. Box 122, FI-96101 Rovaniemi, visiting address Yliopistonkatu 8) by the application deadline.

Required documents

  • a certified copy of the degree diploma stated in the selection criteria
  • a certified copy of completed, advanced-level major subject studies or corresponding studies
  • a preliminary research plan regarding your licentiate or doctoral thesis (see structure of the research plan attached to this website).Those who have taken a degree abroad must attach a summary of the written thesis corresponding to a pro gradu (Master’s) thesis and an account of the studies included in the degree. The summary of the thesis must be written in English.

Selection and results

Postgraduate students are selected on the basis of the quality and contents of the research plan. Quality relates to the clarity and feasibility of the plan as well as its potential to create new knowledge for the benefit of the discipline. Contents relate to the importance and innovativeness of the topic and to the way in which the topic corresponds to the research aims of the faculty.

The results of the admission are sent in a letter to all applicants immediately after the decision – in spring latest on 31 May and in autumn latest on 15 December. The student will receive simultaneously a right to study for the degrees of Licentiate/Doctor of Social Sciences or Administrative Sciences.
