The amount of mandatory basic studies in statistics depends on the faculty, training program, and major subject. Instead of focusing on traditional statistics, the contents of various study subjects are addressed in teaching. In practice it means that materials collected at the University of Lapland are used in teaching, and instead of formulas the focus is on how the material is analyzed in a rational way and how the results can be interpreted with respect to the original problem setting.
Statistics is a good minor subject for students of e.g. economics, tourism research, and sociology, but it can also be studied by those aiming for a career within research.
Statistics can be studied at the University of Lapland as basic studies (25 cr.). The basic studies may be completed in the traditional or in a survey-oriented way, or by combining the two. The courses and their descriptions can be found at WebOodi.
