Faculty of Education
The Faculty of Education is one of the oldest faculties at the University of Lapland. It was founded in 1979.
The Faculty has long established tradition of educating experts within a variety of fields. The current Bachelors and Masters Degree programmes in the Faculty are Primary/Class Teacher Training, Education, Adult Education and Media Education. In addition the Faculty provides courses for exchange students, students doing their minor subjects at the Faculty and also for non-degree students in further education, Open University and Provincial Institution of Higher Education.
The research work done in the Faculty has four focus areas: educational research, subject didactical research, women’s studies, and media educational research.
Faculty’s international teaching is being taught and developed together with the University’s International Studies Centre. So far international teaching has been organized for example in English language, handicraft teaching, physical education, women´s studies and global education. The Faculty collaborates also with universities abroad, for example with universities in Great Britain, Hungary, Spain, Austria and Cyprus.
There are five different units which belong to the faculty of education.
Unit for Further Education provides vocational courses for education personnel in the field of teaching and education. The unit also provides short-term (refresher) courses/further education courses that:
- relate to working in the field of education.
- answer to the wants and needs arising from the clients and labour market.
- will help people who work in the field of education.
Centre for Media Pedagogy (CMP) offers training and support services. It carries out research and product development projects.
Women’s Studies Unit organizes and provides teaching for students in different faculties, units and at the Open University. Women’s Studies is inter- and multidisciplinary fields of research.
Centre of Learning, Studying and Teaching is also known as OUNAS. OUNAS is a research unit covering the areas of didactics, educational psychology, special education and adult education.
Teacher Training School is part of the Faculty of education and the University of Lapland. The Teacher Training School is responsible for organizing the practise and training periods for the primary/class teacher trainees and other students.
