The Challenges of Public Sector Communication and the Effectiveness of Data Protection in the Network Society

The Nordic Conference on Legal Informatics, November 24–25, 2011, Rovaniemi

The meeting of the Nordic postgraduates preceding the Conference will take place on November 23

The Nordic Conference begins with a get-together on 23 November at 7 p.m.

The main participants and speakers include Cecilia Magnusson Sjöberg, Dag Wiese Schartum, Peter Blume, Peter Wahlgren, Wolfgang Mincke and Erich Schweighofer, as well as, Kaarle Nordenstreng, Reijo Aarnio and Tuomas Pöysti.

The main themes of the Conference are related to the remarkable change which we are witnessing in the new Network Society. We have seen substantial changes in social networking services as new public spaces, in different forms of social and unsocial media and the related commercial competition as well as in the attitude of the public authorities towards the distribution of free information and towards communication. Several significant basic questions, such as people’s right to information and the obligation of the public authorities to provide information to the full extent allowed by personal data processing today, are totally different than they were a few years ago. Dealing with these questions as it does, Legal Informatics as a legal science and a communication science is facing a challenging demand for reform. The expert presentations to be heard at our conference will be steps on this deep-going effort.
