Workstation logon speeded up
The University of Lapland will discontinue the use of network profiles (roaming profiles) as of Tuesday 18 May 2010. Profiles stored on the workstation will be used instead. Due to the network profile, the user settings (desktop layout, icons, browser's favourites, etc.) and files stored on the desktop or in the Personal Files folder have been visible to the user also when logged on another workstation.
Network profiles are terminated because of the following:
- Logging onto workstations has been slow when using the network profile.
- Using network profiles causes many problems for example due to varied language settings and operating system versions.
- The other organizations of the Lapland University Consortium do not use network profiles, and due to the mobility of students and personnel it is expected that network profiles would further increase the number of problems.
- The gradual shift to Windows 7 would cause significant problems with network profiles.
Ending the use of network profiles means the following:
- Files stored on a single computer’s desktop or in the Personal Files folder are not visible when the user logs onto another workstation, for example a laptop. Furthermore, the files are not backed up by the ICT Services.
- Users must copy their important files on a network drive. This concerns files presently stored on the desktop and in the Personal Files folder. The logon procedure slows down if there are many large files on the desktop and in the Personal Files folder. The personnel’s default network drive is \\halla\home\<username> (H:), for example \\halla\home\jjohnson (H:)
The student´s default network drive us \\viipu\home\<username> (H:), for example \\viipus\home\jjohnson (H:)
- From now on, users must store all files on their own network drive. From the network drive, files are available also via another workstation when operating in the university network.
- Network drives are not accessible from outside the university network. If you wish to use files outside the university, you must store them on an external memory device or the computer's C: drive.
- The ICT Services only back up files that are stored on a network drive.
- Desktop settings (wallpapers, shortcut icons, etc.) must be made separately for each workstation.
- Application settings, such as your web browser’s Favourites, are not automatically visible in an application running on another computer. You must therefore copy them from your own computer to the one to be used.
