Foreign language, basic courses (CEFR A1-A2)

The basic courses are meant for students in every faculty. A basic course 1, e.g. XITA0001 Italian 1, starts from the very basics, so no previous studies on the language are required. Those who have already studied a language are placed on course levels that match their skills. All types of language skills are practiced on the basic courses. The main focus, however, is on phonetics and basic grammar as well as on oral skills and listening comprehension.

The aim of the studies is to raise the students’ active and passive language skills to an adequate level so that they can take part in mandatory and optional courses and make use of their language skills e.g. in student exchange programs.

The basic courses are meant for students in every faculty. A basic course 1, e.g. XFIN0001 Finnish for Foreigners 1, starts from the very basics, so no previous studies on the language are required. Those who have already studied a language are placed on course levels that match their skills. All types of language skills are practiced on the basic courses. The main focus, however, is on phonetics and basic grammar as well as on oral skills and listening comprehension.

XENG0200 ENGLISH: LANGUAGE USE AND CULTURE (CEFR C1) (25 ECTS)

The English Language Use and Culture study module is aimed at students who wish to broaden their skills and knowledge of the English language and deepen their understanding of various English-speaking cultures. The module includes studies in English language usage (grammar, vocabulary, speaking skills, writing skills) and society and culture (the USA, Britain, Australia, literature).

After completing the module, students should have a deeper understanding of English-speaking societies and cultures as well as an improved ability to use the English language. Students should also be able to analyse and compare the cultures of several English-speaking societies with their own cultures. Successful completion of the module will provide students with linguistic and cultural support in interactions with English-speaking people across a variety of contexts including work, studies, research, and leisure time.

Students can either complete the whole 25-credit module or take individual courses.

XFIN0220 FINNISH: LANGUAGE USE AND CULTURE (CEFR B2) (25 ECTS)
(Finnish as a foreign language)

The study module Finnish: Language Use and Culture is aimed at the students and personnel of the University of Lapland, the Open University, and the University of Applied Sciences who speak Finnish as a foreign language and have completed basic studies in Finnish or have corresponding skills. The language of instruction is Finnish, except for the XFIN0230 Finnish Culture course, which is taught in English. English may be used when
needed on the first two courses (XFIN0221, XFIN0222). You may complete either a 25-credit study module or individual courses.

The studies will make you familiar with the structure and vocabulary of Finnish and improve your reading comprehension as well as your oral and writing skills. You can also expand and deepen your knowledge of Finland and its culture.

Having completed the study module you can read the literature of your own field in Finnish and you can speak and write Finnish relatively well. You will get an overall picture of the Finnish lifestyle, culture, and history. You can also analyse and make comparisons between Finnish culture and your own.

The Language Use and Culture study module is aimed at students who have completed the basic studies in a foreign language or who have the corresponding skills. The student may complete the whole 25-credit module or take individual study units according to his/her interests. The studies focus on language structure and vocabulary and on practicing oral and written skills. In addition, the students get a broader and deeper understanding of the country and its culture.

After completing the study module, the student should have an overall picture of German-language culture as well as an improved ability to use the language. The student should be able to analyze and compare the culture of the major German-speaking countries with his/her own culture. Successful completion of the module will provide the student with linguistic and cultural support in interactions with German-speaking people in working life, research, studies, and free time.

XKIE0200 Languages and Cultures (25 ECTS)

Languages and Cultures (25 ECTS credits) is anattractive minor subject solution, if you wish to diversify your language and culture skills and to prepare yourself for today’s international work environments. The courses are divided in two modules: languages and cultures. Each module comprises 12–13 ECTS credits, so that an even split between language and culture will be achieved.


Module 1: Languages (12–13 ECTS)

You may study at least two (2) but no more than four (4) languages.
As for beginner’s courses (CEFR A1-A2), you may not complete more than 6 ECTS credits.

All language courses organized by the Language Center can be found in WebOodi.

PLEASE NOTE: The following courses may not be included:
- Finnish students: courses in Finnish, Swedish or English
- International students: courses in the student’s own native language or in English.


Module 2: Cultures (12–13 ECTS)

You may take any course dealing with modern-day culture (a nation’s mentality, society, working life, etc.) but not courses dealing with cultural history.
