SUBSTITUTION OF LANGUAGE STUDIES

Substitution refers to the substitution of language studies, which are a part of a degree, with corresponding studies completed elsewhere. Substituting language studies is requested from the Language Centre.

How to apply

The application form for course substitution is available from the office of the Language Centre or at on the table opposite the office (E wing, 2nd floor, room 269E). The form can also be found from the following links, but viewing requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader programme, which can be downloaded from the Adobe website for free.

The student fills in his or her details, and attaches a copy of the certificate of completed studies and a description of them (for example from the study guide) to the form. The attachments must contain the following information:

* the name and level of the educational institution (for courses completed abroad, the institution is stated as a corresponding Finnish one)
* the field of science or education, in which the course is included.
* number of credits and the working hours of the course
* the grade (for studies not completed in a university)
* the content of the course in a way which allows evaluating whether a substitution is possible or not
* the date when the studies were completed.

The application can not be handled before the required attachments are delivered.

The filled-in form and the attachments are handed in to the office of the Language Centre (E wing, 2nd floor, room 269E). There is also a white mailbox opposite the office where the filled-in forms can be put. The forms can also be mailed to the address University of Lapland, Language Centre, P.O. Box 122 , 96101 ROVANIEMI.

Note: One substitution application of one language (e.g. Swedish, English) per form. Each form must have its own attachments. The applications are handled on the basis of the subject.

Substitution decisions

Accepted substitutions are entered into the study register. In other cases the teacher of the course notifies the student via email.

* if the earlier studies are accepted as a substitution, they can be seen in the study register
* if the earlier studies are accepted as a partial substitution, the teacher of the course sends an email on the required extra assignments
* if the earlier studies are not accepted as a substitution, the teacher of the course notifies the student of the decision via email.

The grounds for substitution decisions

Substitution decisions are made on the basis of the national recommendation of the board of directors of language centres.

Registering completed courses

Substitutions are entered into the register at the Language Centre. Due to the large number of applications, entering the substitutions into the register may take some time, which is why it is recommended that the substitutions should be applied for at the beginning of studies.
