TEACH AND LEARN - PAIR WORK PROGRAMME (2 ECTS credits)
The Language Centre instructs and supervises Teach and Learn - the pair work programme in which students guide each other to their own language and culture. Students meet each other regularly every week, and discuss predetermined topics. At the beginning of the course, the course contents are agreed on with a Language Centre teacher who will also be reported on meetings and proceeding of studying via the journal.
The aim of Teach and Learn - the pair work programme is to
1. provide an opportunity to get to know the culture and life of the target country as well as develop communication skills in the target language
2. use both languages equally so that speakers of both languages get to practise the target language
3. increase contacts between Finns and foreigners
4. help foreign students to adapt to Finnish life and on the other hand prepare Finnish students for foreign internship.
The programme is aimed at learners at all levels, also beginners. Students are required of regular participation to weekly meetings, writing a follow-up journal and reporting to a tutor. The total workload will be 50 hours and there will be 1 or 2 meetings every week.
Both students earn 2 ECTS credits each, if the course is passed. The evaluation will be pass/fail. The credits will be given with the code of the language that the student studied in the programme (eg. Finnish for Foreigners XFIN0010, Russian XVEN0010). The course is optional and does not replace other language courses but supplements them.
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PROGRAM PARTICIPANTS
FINDING A PARTNER AND PREPARATION OF THE STUDY PLAN
Find yourself a partner whose mother tongue you wish to learn.
Having found yourself a partner, prepare a study plan and make it as concrete and detailed as possible.
- timetable and studying environment
- list of themes to be studied
- study book, if there is one available
Your objectives must be concrete and they should be based on enhancing your present language skills. (For example, your target may be to be able to talk about yourself or your own field, to understand newspaper text, or to write a summary.)
REGISTRATION
Please, fill out your course plans and register (you and your pair) at the Language Centre during the teacher's reception hours or arrange a meeting beforehand. You may start the program after the initial discussion and approval of the course plan. The course plans remain in the possession of the supervising teacher.

PROGRAM PROCEEDINGS
Each student gathers the material used (e.g. texts, written exercises, their corrections, etc.) into a folder and keeps a diary of the sessions (time of the session, duration, themes under study, working methods and comments on one's own learning).
It is important to prepare for the sessions, for example by reading or writing an agreed passage of text or by studying vocabulary related to the theme of discussion. It is equally important to utilize later the things you have learned.
All languages are studied separately. If you have a session of two hours, it is recommendable to use the first hour for studying language A and the other for language B.
PROGRAM REPORTING
At the end of the program, please fill out the self-assessment form, with which you assess the success of your studies and your learning. This applies to both of you.
A performance can be passed only if both students attend the initial and closing discussions. You may attend the closing discussion during the teacher's reception hours or you may settle a time beforehand.
For the closing discussion, make sure you bring
- the material you used in the Teach and Learn studies
- the diaries
- the self-assessment forms.
