Joy of Learning

Emotions are evident in the classroom and I am studying them from the perspective of the joy of learning. I have defined the idea in my 2005 dissertation Seeking the Joy of Learning - the Ethnography of Experience in Elementary Instruction.  It is crucial to face the emotional challenge of  learning, because no pupils in Europe dislike school as much as Finnish pupils do.

The perspective of the teacher as an researcher of her/his work is also a strong theme in my study. I call my approach the ethnography of experience. The teacher cannot monitor events in the classroom from the sidelines. She or he always contributes to the events and  pupils’ experiences. The key concepts of ethnography are interpreted moving via the backyards of Chicago close to us, ourselves. This is where the field actually lies, isn’t it?
