INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION PROGRAM (ICP) (25 ECTS cr)
(Organized by the Language Centre)

Program Aim

In a globalizing world, problems and misunderstandings rooted in cultural differences are increasing steadily. The purpose of the Intercultural Communication Program (ICP) is to introduce the main topics in the field of intercultural communication and to enable participants to analyse and understand culture related aspects of communication. At the same time, they are expected to widen and/or deepen their language and culture skills considerably.

The ICP is suitable for Finnish and exchange students alike. Participants do not have to complete the entire program, but are free to choose individual courses according to their own interests. However, participation in the introductory course is highly recommended to anyone interested in the subject of intercultural communication.

Program Structure

The ICP consists of three modules:
1. A compulsory introduction to intercultural communication, 5 ECTS cr
2. Language and culture Studies, 8-12 ECTS cr
3. Applications of intercultural communication, 8-12 ECTS cr.

Modules 2 and 3 serve as headlines, under which a variety of courses may be included in the ICP. Module 2 covers courses in language and culture studies organized by the the Language Centre. Module 3 covers advanced courses in intercultural communication. Also, a number of courses from other fields of study (other subjects) may be included in the program, if the program coordinator decides they fit the profile (max. 6 and 7 ECTS respectively per module).

All courses on intercultural communication are taught in English. However, module 2 (language and culture studies) may require skills in the respective languages.

The ICP courses are not recommended for first year students. Please note that the complete ICP (25 ECTS cr) will take at least one academic year to complete. Please register for the courses through WebOodi.

Coordination

The Program Coordinator is responsible for practical and academic implementation of the program, as well as literature exams and matters related to the academic content of the courses.
