Cultural Encounters and Northern Reflections

WAAE Summit 2012, 7 - 10 November 2012

Rationale

At a time when global resources and economies tighten, arts educators have a role in re-inventing, re-visioning, re-searching new and traditional means for engaging communities and especially young people.

Extending and deepening the reach of arts education in schools, in communities, and in diverse people’s lives remains a rationale for leaders in arts education to meet and collectively work to advance the role of arts education.

The World Alliance for Arts Education and the Institute for Northern Culture, University of Lapland, Finland, will host a global gathering of arts educators at the most northerly university in the European Union. We invite you to learn of and discuss arts education informed by diverse global perspectives such as those from the Arctic rim.

The focus of this summit includes:

  • sharing international arts education research on pedagogy, curriculum, cultural sustainability and community engagement
  • reviewing and developing the WAAE alliance and strategic plans within the areas of Research, Advocacy, Networking
  • advancing understanding of UNESCO’s Seoul Agenda: Goals for Arts Education

Beyond Rovaniemi

Our meeting in Rovaniemi, Finland, will be followed by another WAAE gathering at Wildbad Kreuth, Munich, May 2013. The University of Erlangen-Nuremburg, German Federation for Arts Education and Cultural Learning, and Hans Seidel Foundation will host us, helping to further develop an international arts education agenda that focuses upon research, networking and advocacy.

The meetings in Rovaniemi 2012 and Wildbad Kreuth 2013 are related and specifically designed for leading art educators with interests in trans- arts, trans -national and trans- cultural strategic planning.

If you want to be a part of informing future international policy development, research, advocacy and networking, then we look forward to hearing from you.
