LYY- Membership and Benefits


For whom?

All Finnish and international degree students at the University of Lapland are automatically members of the Student Union. For exchange and doctoral students the membership is voluntary. Exchange students are entitled to join if their studies and stay in Finland last for more than 3 months, the purpose of their study is completion of a basic university degree (BA or MA) and their studies in Finland are free of any tuition fees.

What benefits there are?

As a members of the Student Union you are entitled to a variety of benefits:

  • Subsidised lunches in all student restaurants for example in the Felli restaurant (Main Building), the Petronella student restaurant (Faculty of Art and Design), Cafe Lovisa (Main Building) and the Kuukkeli restaurant (State Office Building, Hallituskatu 1-3). A meal in Felli, Petronella and Lovisa costs about 2.50 euro and in Kuukkeli 3.20 euro
  • Student health care services (see Student Health Care Services)
  • Train tickets: 50% discount
  • Long-distance bus tickets: 50% discount (minimum distance: 80 km)
  • Discounts at youth hostels, museums, theatres, concerts, swimming pools, shops, ski resorts, restaurants, etc.
  • NOTE: Doctoral students are not entitled to have Health Care services, subsidised lunches or discounts on train or long-distance busses. They are entitled to have consultation and other services of the Student union and all other benefits of student card like discounts at hostels, museums, concerts etc. 


    What does it cost?

    The membership fee for academic year 2014-2015 is 93 euro (49 euro for the autumn semester and 50 euro for the spring semester). The discounts available to members  really make this a worthwhile investment. The student card costs an additional 16 euro. This sum can be paid during the orientation week.

    How can I join the Student Union and get a Student Card?

    1) Register as a student at the University.

    2) Pay the Student Union membership fee. Degree students get the info with their admission letter. Exchange students can pay the fee in cash during the orientation week or at the Student Union office.

    3) Go to and fill in the online student card application form. You will need to upload a digital photo of yourself.

    If you haven´t paid the student card fee during the orientation program, you can pay for it online. On the payment page choose "bank giro" as your method of payment. Keep the receipt with you until you receive the student card! This will guarantee you subsidised university lunches!

    After two to three weeks you will receive an e-mail informing you that your student card is ready to collect from the Student Union’s office.
