The Opening session of the seminar will set the scene for the conference by analysing the role of the mining industry in the European context. During this session, the role of the Barents region in this development is discussed.

10.30-12.30 Session II

Facilitated roundtable discussion will provide an insight into how sustainable mining is implemented in practice in the Barents region countries, focusing on:

  • Current practices: participation and relationships between mining projects and local mining communities;
  • The legal structure: Improving policy instruments and regulations;
  • Arctic, international law and rights of the Sami people in mining projects

In addition the point of view of Strategic Implementation Plan of the European Innovation Partnership on Raw Materials, which relate to Public awareness, acceptance and trust and to the Mining Framework conditions, will be discussed in the roundtable.

Round table discussion, facilitated by Peter O’Donnell. Eight researchers involved in SUMILCERE will discuss about the Sustainable Mining, local communities, and environmental regulation in the Barents area.
