The working life connections of doctors graduating from the University of Lapland are enhanced by adding various forms of related cooperation into doctoral education. This work is supported by a project funded by the European Social Fund (ESF).
The Graduate School of the University of Lapland supports doctoral education in the university’s faculties by organising teaching intended for all doctoral students and by arranging events intended for doctoral students and instructors. This work will now extend to advancing doctoral students’ working life connections.
The project Working Life Cooperation in Strategic Doctoral Training will be launched at the University of Lapland on 1 September 2019. The project will increase job market cooperation in doctoral training through the following two key measures:
1) improving employment capacity as part of the strategic doctoral programme, and
2) reinforcing cooperation between academia and the job market through reciprocal visits.
Through these measures, the Graduate School will pilot and asses the most appropriate tools and practices to increase cooperation with companies and other actors in doctoral training In addition, the university’s strategic doctoral programme will be updated to meet the challenges of job market cooperation. This work produces courses, practices, and a workflow plan that will enable fluent cooperation between academia and the job market as part of the university’s doctoral training.
The University of Lapland has four faculties – Education, Law, Art and Design, and Social Sciences – that award around 30 doctoral degrees annually. In recent years, doctors’ working life connections have been discussed in the national media, and universities have taken various measures to address the issue. The University of Lapland also produces scientific knowledge on Arctic and northern issues to make sure that life in these regions will continue to flourish.
Working Life Cooperation in Strategic doctoral training: The starting point of this project that is partly funded by the EU is the widely recognized need to develop the university’s doctoral training toward job market cooperation. The aim of the project is to create and establish forms, models, practices, and services of doctoral education that will enhance doctors’ employment, generate stronger interaction between academia and the job market, and enhance doctoral students’ working life affiliations and employment capacity. The North Ostrobothnia Centre for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centre) has awarded ESF funding for the project for the period 1 September 2019 – 31 March 2022. The total budget of the project is 270,000 euros. The project executive is Antti Syväjärvi, Vice-Rector for Research at the University of Lapland.
