The importance of English is self-evident to anyone and everyone living in today’s world. English language courses at the University of Lapland focus on improving students’ language skills for academic and professional purposes. The courses are aimed at supporting students in becoming international experts in their field.

The Language Centre offers both compulsory and elective courses. Compulsory courses are focused on oral communication, reading and writing, while elective courses offer students a variety of language use and culture-related topics to explore.

Are you interested in further improving your English language skills for academic and professional purposes? Are you planning on travelling or working abroad? Would you like to have an international career? Would you like to learn about the culture of English-speaking countries? Are you interested in reading literature in English?

If so, these elective English courses are for you. You can choose individual courses according to the topics that interest you or skills you need to improve, or you can complete the whole 25-credit English Language Use and Culture module as a minor.

Do you offer online or distance learning courses?

At the moment, we offer the course TENG0105 English Writing for Academic Purposes as an online course two times during each academic year. For other English courses, you are required to attend 80 % of the contact teaching hours. Also, usually, you cannot make up for extra absences by completing written assignments.

Can I include courses completed elsewhere into my degree?

If you have completed courses at another university or university of applied sciences (in Finland or abroad), you can apply for credit transfer.

I am not a student of the University of Lapland. Can I participate in courses?

Yes. But you need to apply through the Open University. There will be a course fee.
