Climate change is pushing politicians to adopt ambitious policies in a bid to move towards a carbon-neutral future. Implementing such policies is difficult due to the complexity of society and societal structures. Furthermore, the effects of such policies can differ drastically from what is initially envisioned – or they may have positive effects for some and negative for others.
Law is one such societal structure that is coupled with effectuating transitions, and often the functioning of law is entwined with political and economic interests. The role of political economy and law are thus central in the study of societal transformations such as sustainability transitions or the EU’s Green Deal.
The purpose of this interdisciplinary seminar is to probe into the meaning and being of the ongoing transformation, its historical origins and practical outcomes.
The seminar begins with a keynote presentation by professor Poul Kjaer from the Copenhagen Business School. Professor Kjaer’s presentation stems from his ongoing ERC Advanced Grant Project ‘Global Value Chain Law: Constituting Connectivity, Contracts and Corporations’. Previously professor Kjaer led an ERC Starting Grant Project on ‘Institutional Transformation in European Political Economy – A Socio-legal Approach’. The seminar is then followed by four presentations by staff of the University of Lapland on various themes related to transformations. Please, see the detailed programme below.
Only onsite participation is possible. Please sign up for the seminar here ->
The following day there will be a masterclass for PhD students on the same topic organized by professor Kjaer and university lecturer Tomi Tuominen. More information on the masterclass can be found in Peppi, where it is listed as a course under the code OJATKO1A-3003. PhD students from other faculties than law are asked to consult their own faculty’s study guidelines for how to obtain credits from participation.
