In order to be eligible to the International Master’s Degree programmes at the University Lapland, you need to fulfill the following criteria:
A) Educational Background: Bachelor’s or Master´s level degree in a relevant field of study
An applicant may apply for master's degree studies if she/he has completed a first degree (normally a bachelor’s degree) in a relevant field of study at a recognized institution of higher education entitling her/him to apply for master’s degree studies in her/his home country. You can find the programme specific detailed eligibility criteria on the pages of each programme.
Applicants who will be graduating after the application deadline can apply for admission before they have received their diploma. They should indicate the expected date of graduation on the application form and submit proof of graduation by a deadline in July informed to them in more detail in the acceptance email.
B) Language Requirements: A good command of the English language for academic purposes

. Please note that each applicant must prove their proficiency in the English language in one of the ways stated in the language requirements.
C) Submitting a full application
If you do not submit a full application, you will not be considered eligible. Full application means that you have submitted the online application form by the application deadline and that all the required attachments are uploaded to the application by the given deadline.
In addition, we have strict requirements for officially certified copies of educational documents and official translations. Copies of educational documents and translations that do not meet our requirements will not be considered in the admission process, and consequently the application will be considered ineligible.
Therefore, it is very important to upload all the required attachments in good time before the deadline, and to make sure that educational documents and official translations fulfill our requirements. It is in your best interest to deliver your application documents as early as possible.
3. Get to know the application process and timetable
Application period starts on 7th of January 2021. You can apply to the programme of your choice through the national Studyinfo Portal, which is an electronic application system. Link to the application form is open only during the application period.

- Admission results by: June 4th 2021 at the latest

- Delivering proof of graduation (students graduating after January 22nd 2020): July 31st 2021

4. Collect the required enclosures
Application documents are programme specific. The admissions requirements are set by each master's programme, meaning the number and type of documents to be submitted vary depending on the programme. Please check the detailed information on the application documents for each programme.
All educational documents must be officially certified and translated. General info on application documents and their attestation you will find here.
When putting together the documents, please also note that there are country-specific document requirements for some degree-awarding countries that need to be followed first and foremost.
If application documents are mailed in by a third party, e.g. your university officials, language test centres, etc. the University of Lapland will match them to your application according to the personal details on those documents. If the documents are submitted separately to the University, they should clearly state the name of the applicant.
5. Fill in the Application Form and submit it
Applications are filled in and submitted only through the national Studyinfo Portal. The online application form will be available in the Studyinfo.fi -portal only during the application period. Follow the Fill in application –link in Studyinfo.
Make sure you have all the required documents ready before you start your application as you need to upload them to the application:
- certified as required by the University of Lapland
- scanned and in PDF format
Once you have filled in the application form and uploaded all the required documents you can submit your application and it will be saved. You cannot pause the electronic application once you have started filling it in. You cannot save a draft of the application form. If you close the form without submitting it, the information you have entered on the form will be lost. After submitting the form you will receive a confirmation e-mail with a personal link through which you can make changes until the end of the application period.
If you are applying to more than one international master’s degree programme at the University of Lapland, please fill in only one form. On the form, you are asked to choose the programme(s) you are applying to. With the same form, you can also apply for the scholarship which covers the tuition fee, in case you would be liable to pay the tuition fee
6. Upload the required enclosures to the online application
Upload all the required documents by the given deadline. It is in your best interest to submit your application documents as soon as possible. E-mail attachments will not be accepted. University of Lapland does not process any application documents that have arrived after the deadline.
Collect the required documents. Information concerning the documents is available on the programme specific admission application requirements, and also on your online application. There are certain requirements for the documents uploaded in electronic format:
• We accept scanned copies of the original degree certificates and transcripts as well as the translations when they are required. Scanned copies must meet the application documents requirements.
• We do not accept scans of photocopies unless they have been certified by the awarding institution.
• Please scan the original documents with care, always scan in color and remember to scan all pages. If your scan is blurred, discoloured or the file is flawed it will not be accepted. The use of PDF -format is encouraged, as this ensures that the files can be opened in all operating systems.
The authenticity of all documents will be examined and the submission of forged documents will lead to automatic rejection of the applicant.
If application documents are mailed in by a third party, e.g. your university officials, the admissions office will forward the documents to the programme coordinator for evaluation. These documents can be mailed to University of Lapland:

It is always the applicant’s responsibility to make sure that the application documents meet the requirements and reach the University of Lapland by the deadline. University of Lapland does not process any application documents that have arrived after the deadline.

7. Application period closes and applications are being processed
We will start processing your application once the application period ends 20th of January 2021 at 15:00 (GMT +2).
We will check your eligibility, verify that your language skills meet the requirements, check that all of the required educational documents have been uploaded and verify your credentials. The faculty responsible for the programme in question makes the decision on the admission of applicants to the programme.
Once your documents have been processed, you will receive an email notification from us, informing you of the status of your application. Please be patient, we will contact you as soon as possible.
8. Student selections are made
Results of the application round are announced via e-mail to all applicants by June 4th at the latest. Admitted applicants will receive a welcoming letter by email, accompanied with the scholarships information if applicable.
9. Accept your study place
Admitted students need to confirm their acceptance of the study place offered to them in the Studyinfo portal by July 16th 2021. Please note that you can only accept one study place at a higher education institution leading to a university degree starting at the same academic term. This is due to the one study place per term provision of Finnish higher education. Thus it is not possible to accept the study place after the given deadline, nor is it possible to cancel the acceptance after accepting the study place in Studyinfo.
10. Enroll and register as a student
After accepting your study place, you need to register as an attending student in order to enroll yourself to the University. To register, you need to pay for the Student Union fee (approximately 81,50 euros per academic year) to the Student Union of the University of Lapland. Students who are required to pay the tuition fee are asked to make the tuition fee payment for the first academic year before enrolling. Further instructions on tuition fees and enrollment will be sent to students by email.
