University Board

Term and members

University Board has 11 members: five of them are external and six are from within the university. Professors have two representatives; researchers, teachers and general personnel have two as well; and also students are represented by two members of the board.

The term of the Board is from 1 January 2024 to 31 December 2026. Student members are selected for one-year term by the Student Union.

• to decide on the central objectives, strategy, and steering principles of the University operations and economy;
• to decide on the University's action plan, financial plan, and budget as well as to draw up the financial statement;
• to be responsible for the management and usage of the University’s capital, unless the Board has delegated the authority to the Rector;
• to arrange control over accounting and financial management;
• to approve significant agreements or agreements of principle concerning the University operations and to provide statements on important matters of principle concerning the University;
• to approve the agreement made with the Ministry of Education and Culture on behalf of the University;
• to appoint the Rector and to dismiss the Rector if there is a legitimate and well-founded reason for doing so in consideration of the nature of the position;
• to appoint vice rectors on the basis of the Rector's proposal;
• to approve rules of procedure and other corresponding rules and regulations about general organisation and to decide on the operational structure of the University;

• to submit a proposal to the Ministry of Education and Culture about changes in the educational responsibilities of the University;
• to decide on the number of student intake to the University;
• to decide on arranging a ceremonial conferment of degrees and granting the title doctor honoris causa on the basis of a proposal submitted by a faculty or unit;
• to grant the title of professor to a person working for the University;
• to grant University medals for activity conducted with distinction to serve the University;
• to appoint the Advisory Board of the Lapland University Consortium in collaboration with Lapland University of Applied Sciences.

The Chair of the Board, together with the Rector, is to carry out agreement negotiations with the Ministry of Education and Culture.
