Collection of Kari Huhtamo Art Foundation
The core of the Kari Huhtamo Art Foundation collection consists of Huhtamo’s sculptures dating 1982–2003. The collection, owned by the foundation, has been exhibited in the public indoor spaces and grounds of our university since 2005, on the basis of the collaboration agreement signed between our university and the art foundation.
The Kari Huhtamo Art Foundation was founded in 2005 and its aim is to preserve the artworks and other artistic material of Huhtamo, D.A. h.c. and make them accessible to the public. The foundation also promotes all art education and research of northern art and particularly that of our university.
Collection of Finnish State Art Commission
Since 1956, the Finnish State Art Commission has purchased works of art for the public spaces of the state. These works adorn over 600 destinations in Finland and abroad. About fifty pieces from the collection are displayed in the indoor and outdoor facilities of our university.
The commission acquires artworks by organising competitions, ordering, and purchasing them at galleries or directly from the artists. The works are placed in public places, in the everyday environment of ordinary people, to reach the widest audience possible.
The expertise of the staff of our Faculty of Art and Design spans numerous fields of visual arts, media art, design, and environmental and community art. Our artistic productions include both local artworks as well as national and international productions.
The Jenny and Antti Wihuri Foundation is a Finnish non-profit organisation supporting cultural and economic development in Finland. It was established in 1942 by the sea captain, ship owner and industrialist Antti Wihuri and his wife Jenny.
Every semester the foundation awards one artist a grant that enables him or her to work on an artistic production at our Faculty of Art and Design for three months. The artist is invited by the faculty and the arts division of the foundation. Most of the visiting artists hold exhibitions in the faculty galleries or other exhibition spaces in Rovaniemi.
The visiting artists are given the perfect opportunity for undisturbed work and intense concentration in a setting surrounded by northern nature. They also have the chance to get involved in our academic community and the local cultural scene.
