The studies Philosophy of research and research skills – or more informally joint studies – are open to all ULapland doctoral researchers and constitute a part of the doctoral degree. Joint studies offer doctoral researchers possibilities to build their knowledge base and their ability to independently and critically apply research methods in creating new research-based information.

Doctoral degree holders have traditionally been employed by Finnish universities and research institutes in teaching and research. In the light of recent societal developments, a growing number of doctoral degree holders pursue a career outside academia, working in expert tasks in companies and in the public sector and sometimes as self-employed entrepreneurs. Of course, some doctoral degree holders continue to follow more traditional career paths in academia.

The University of Lapland offers support to you in your career planning and in strengthening some important working life skills. The Faculties, the Doctoral School, and the Career and Recruitment Services have together developed different ways for supporting your career planning.

As a doctoral researcher you are working towards being among the experts in your field. Make sure that anyone who is looking for information about your research and publications will be able to find it easily – even if you still are at the early stages of your doctoral research.

Build your network!

The two most significant social networking sites for academics are Academia.edu and ResearchGate.net. You can create your own profile in both of them for free. You can also upload your own publications there if they are suitable for open distribution to other researchers. Moreover, the sites are useful for networking with other researchers and looking for publications in your own field.

Keep your profile in Research Portal updated

Our Research Portal gathers together information on the scientific and artistic activities of the University of Lapland and gives the opportunity to highlight your activities and expertise. It is easy to maintain your own profile and, for example, a list of publications through the portal.

Every researcher has a profile that enhances their visibility and findability and makes their connection to the University of Lapland clear. Since the beginning of the year 2023 the profiles of new doctoral researchers are public as a default. If you have started as a doctoral researcher before that, you can change the visibility setting to public. It is also possible to hide the profile from public view.

Create an ORCID iD

It is recommended that you get a persistent digital identifier for researchers called ORCID iD. Using ORCID iD is widely recommended and some publishers and funders require it. It reduces the need to enter personal and publication information in several systems and solves problems with changing names and researchers with identical names, for example. ORCID iD can also make it easier to transfer publication information between research organizations. You can link your ORCID iD to our Research Portal. You can create and use other researcher profiles and identifiers as well, for example a Google Scholar Citations user profile,
