Oulanka research station of Oulu university’s Thule institute has received funding for the “Visualization of Environmental Change” project where University of Lapland is a key partner.

The projects aims at depicting environmental change using new methods and perspectives, such as microscope imaging, repeat photography, underwater photography and low elevation aerial photography. The main working method in the project is a yearly international, cross-disciplinary workshop arranged at Oulanka research station. Students and professionals of natural and human sciences and of photography are selected for each workshop to work on yearly topics.

Total funding for the project years 2014-2016 is 293 000 euros, of which the foundation covers 145 613 euros and the rest is covered mainly by work in kind from the participating personnel of the different universities and institutes. Most of the funding will be used for arranging the workshops themselves but a portion will go towards acquiring some needed equipment and also to cover publication costs of the planned photography book.

The project is part of the activities of the University of the Arctic thematic network “Communicating Arctic Research” that started last year. The thematic network is led by UNEP Grid-Arendal (Norway) and University of Oulu. The main partners in the project are University of the Arctic, University of Lapland, Tampere university of applied sciences, UNEP Grid-Arendal, Berliner Technische Kunsthochschule (Germany) and the Academy of environmental and nature photography (Kuusamo, Finland).
