Research workshop on challenges to ageing in the rural north will bring together scholars from multidisciplinary background to initiate conversations and discussions on different issues concerning older people in the rural Arctic. The workshop will be held at the University of Lapland, lecture hall 8.
Keynote speakers:
Paul Higgs is professor of Sociology of Ageing at UCL (University College of London).Chris Gilleard is Visiting Senior Research Fellow in the Department of Social & Policy Sciences at the University of Bath and the Division of Psychiatry at University College London. They have published widely on cultures, contexts and understandings of ageing, and more specifically on e.g. Care and the Moral Identity of the Fourth Age, demographic, historical and cultural aspects of the third and fourth age, embodiment.
Eva-Maria Svensson is a professor of Law at the Department of Law and the director for Centre for Interdisciplinary Gender Research at the University of Gothenburg. For ten years (2005-2015) she worked as a professor at The Arctic University of Norway in Tromsø. She is specialized on legal philosophy, gender equality and ageing. Heli Valokivi is working as university lecturer at the University of Tampere. She has docentship of gerontological social work at the University of Lapland, where she has been worked as a professor. She has published on service system for elderly care, user participation, care and social rehabilitation of elderly people.Associate Professor Joan R. Harbison from the School of Social Work at the Dalhousie University, Halifax, Canada. Her latest book concerns elder abuse and neglect.
This workshop is part of research network project entitled “Advancing Elderly People’s Agency and Inclusion in the Changing Arctic and Nordic Welfare System” has started at the Unit of Gender Studies led by Professor Päivi Naskali and coordinated by researcher Shahnaj Begum.
The project is funded by The Nordic Council of Ministers under its Arctic Co-operation programme for the year 2016 - 2021. The project is scheduled for three years, with participants from the University of Umeå in Sweden, the Arctic University of Norway, University of Dalhousie in Canada, University of Akureyri in Iceland, University of Oulu and University of Helsinki in Finland.
