The United Nations climate conference began in Paris on November 30th. It is loaded with extremely high expectations and for two weeks it will be at the centre of the world’s attention.
The Arctic Centre at the University of Lapland is participating in the conference on Saturday December 5th, in a side event called Arctic Lessons, which will deal with Arctic climate research and the recommendations given to politicians on the grounds of the research. Ilona Mettiäinen, an Arctic Centre researcher, will be talking in the event about regional and local action plans on how to accommodate with climate change in the Arctic.
The main organizer of the side event is the University of Tromsø and Rector Anne Husebekk. Universities from other Nordic countries are also included: in addition to Tromsø, also the universities of Reykjavik, Aarhus, Umeå and Lapland. The event is an example of international cooperation between leading Nordic universities in Arctic research.
“This is an exceptional opportunity to introduce my own research topic to the participants of the most important meeting of the world together with top Nordic researchers”, says Mettiäinen.
The Paris conference is expected to gather around 10000 delegates from different countries, 14000 delegates from various observer organizations and more than 3000 representatives of media during the two conference weeks.
