The conference organized in Nepal brings together experts from both regions, including twelve participants from the University of Lapland.
From 6th to 9th of September, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD) will host the 1st Inter-Polar Conference, jointly organized by the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM) of the Arctic Centre, the University of Lapland, the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), the UArctic Chair in Arctic Legal Research and Education, and the UArctic Law Thematic Network.
During three days, approximately 100 participants will get together to discuss their research. Topics will deal with the issues related to cryosphere, melting glaciers and water, life on thawing lands, societal and political issues, polar perspectives, and role of sciences and technologies in changing polar landscapes.
The overall topic of the conference Connecting the Arctic with the Third Pole, highlights interlinked aspect of cryosphere thaw, climate change, and impacts on local communities and ecosystems, between these regions. Arctic and Third Pole regions are connected by observing significant effects of climate change.
– We were positively surprised by the great interest towards the conference. This reinforces the idea that there really is a need for cooperation. This conference aims to be a starting point for a durable network of experts exploring Arctic and Third Pole topics, says Kamrul Hossain, member of the conference organizing group.
