Art and cultural institutions will strengthen their cooperation in the Barents region
29.5.2012
The art museum professionals, art historians and cultural organizations in the Barents region will establish a cooperation network within an international project led by the Faculty of Art and Design. The network will focus especially on visual arts and art history.
The project
“The Northern Beauty: The Barents Visual Arts in 1970–1980” strives for
establishing continuous, long-term cooperation between the cultural
actors in the Barents region.
The main goal of the new network
is to raise awareness of the rich and diverse art and cultural heritage
in the Northern regions, as well as to improve the accessibility of this
cultural heritage. During the project, the network produces, for
example, the first historical overview of the visual arts in the Barents
region in the 1970s and 1980s. In addition, joint exhibitions,
workshops and symposiums will be organized.
The project has
started in April and it will last until the end of 2014. The project is
coordinated and led by the Faculty of Art and Design at the University
of Lapland. Other partners include the Arts Council of Lapland
(Finland), Saami Artist Center Sami Daiddaguovddas (Norway), Konsthallen
Luleå (Sweden) and art museums from Kemi (Finland) and Murmansk
(Russia).
The project is funded by the EU Kolarctic ENPI CBC program. The total budget is 617 498 euros.
