In the solo exhibition "Mapping the World" the visual artist Sebastian Reis is presenting different approaches that deal with questions regarding the representational value of photographic images. In doing so, surfaces and materials play an important role and become in the shown medium-reflective works their own protagonists. The question, which (possible) photo becomes an image is in the exhibition of a constant presence.

The focus of Sebastian Reis' artistic work lies in considerations that originate from the usage of the medium photography itself. In doing so, not solely the generation of an image is of crucial importance, but also how the apparatus itself determines the photo – and us. In other words, Sebastian Reis does not take photography as a given and unconditional form of depiction; likewise, he observes and discusses the apparatus and his own role, while making use of it when addressing visual phenomena.

Sebastian Reis, born 1985 in Austria, lives and works in Rovaniemi. He studies Photography at the Academy of Fine Arts in Leipzig, Germany and is a member of the Artists' Association of Lapland. Currently he is participating as a free mover student in the field of fine arts at the Faculty of Art and Design, University of Lapland.
