Baby Mammoth Found in Siberia

19.8.2011

A carcass of a baby mammoth has been found in the northern Siberia, says Natalia Fedorova, head of a museum in the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug. If proven well-preserved, it is a third this kind of discovery in the world. The news was told to an expedition of the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland and Northern Cultural Institute (Finland), which is currently visiting Salekhard, Siberia. The news is also published in the local media.

Natalia Fedorova was informed about the discovery on Thursday afternoon. Today she is visiting the location of discovery by helicopter and evaluating further activities.

A well-preserved carcass is scientifically very valuable. There is already a one baby mammoth on display in the museum in Salekhard. It was found in 2007 and named Ljuba. It was only few months old when it died over 42 000 years ago.

The current discovery was made by a reindeer-herder in the Yamal-Nenets region. If it turns out to be a baby boy, Fedorova promises to name it “Pjotr” after the founder.

The expedition of the University of Lapland is travelling on the river Ob and mapping the celebration rituals of Khanty people.
