The Fifth Polar Law Symposium will take place in Arctic Centre on 6–8 September 2012. The Symposium brings together internationally renowned scholars, partaking in both Antarctic and Arctic research, from different parts of the globe.
The accepted presentations cover a broad array of topics related to
polar legal studies, with participants coming from across the
circumpolar North and beyond, including the keynote speakers.
The keynote speakers include Charles Emmerson from Chatham House (author of the best-seller "The Future History of the Arctic"), Donald Rothwell from Australian National University (author of books on polar regions and international law, Antarctic Treaty System, and Arctic governance) and Irja Seurujärvi-Kari from the Institute for the Finnish, Finno-Ugric, and Nordic Language and Literature of the University of Helsinki.
The Symposium expects to have around one hundred participants, especially researchers, policy makers, and students.
The Polar Law Symposium was held for the first time in Akureyri,
Iceland, in 2008, and now it comes for the first time to Finland. The Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM), Arctic Centre, University of Lapland, hosts the Symposium, and the preparations were lead by Professors Gudmundur Alfredsson and Timo Koivurova. The city of Rovaniemi and Kemijoki Ltd are the main partners of the Symposium.
