8.3.2011

University of Lapland has reserved an appropriation of up to 500,000 euros for scientific research and artistic activity within University’s strategic leading areas in 2011. University’s research groups are asked to send the applications for financing by the end of April.

The vision of the University of Lapland is to evolve into an internationally recognized and nationally renowned university of science and art in its leading profile areas. In its meeting on 14 February 2011, the Board of the University of Lapland approved the development plan of the strategic leading profile areas of the University.

An appropriation of up to 500,000 euros has been reserved for scientific research and artistic activity within the strategic leading areas in 2011. The purpose of the financing is to strengthen research within the leading strategy areas; to advance cooperation between sciences, arts, and the units of the University; and to increase international publishing.

Based on the Rector’s decision and an evaluation by external experts, the appropriation is allocated to the planning of research projects within the University’s leading strategic areas or to the implementation of research projects. The appropriation can be used to finance research leaves, hiring of researchers, international networking, and other immediate expenses arising from research.

The largest individual appropriation to be applied for is 100,000 euros. The financing is available for a period of two years.

The financing is intended for research groups. The applicant must be a professor or a staff member with the title of docent at the University of Lapland. The researchers to be hired under the financing must be members of the university community and they must be doctors or persons with outstanding competence in artistic activity. Interaction of science and art, cooperation between the faculties and the Arctic Centre, interdisciplinary activity, and national and international networking are merits in the evaluation of the projects.

The applications must be delivered to the University of Lapland Registry by the end of April. The aim is to carry out the external evaluation and to make the project-related decisions in June.
