A high level international Arctic conference is organized on 1st of June at the Arctic Centre of the University of Lapland. The theme of the conference is The Arctic and the European Union: Environmental and Human Challenges.
The conference is mainly organized by the French Ministry for Foreign Affairs and the French Embassies in Sweden and Finland. The first part of the conference is held in Stockholm on 30th of May. Sweden is a new president of the Arctic Council, and Rovaniemi is a possible location for the EU Arctic Information Centre.
One of the speakers in Rovaniemi is Michel Rocard (French Ambassador for the Arctic and Antarctica, and a former Prime minister of France). The speakers include also Hannu Halinen (Finnish Ambassador for the Arctic), Jacqueline McGlade (director of the European Environmental Agency) and many Arctic experts from Northern Finland.
The conference aims to be a gathering place and a forum for informal exchange for all stakeholders involved or interested in the Arctic issues. Registration is required.
