Students, teachers, and researchers from all over the world gather at the International Summer School in Social Work to discuss social work and social services from a global perspective. The summer school takes place at the University of Lapland from 20 May to 5 June 2013.
The lectures at the summer school focus on issues such as the German view on social pedagogy in multicultural communities, the status of Romany minorities in Romania, women’s rights in Nepal, the effects of neoliberalism on social work, and research among indigenous peoples. The lectures are held between 20 and 24 May, and they are open to all students and personnel of the University of Lapland.
For example the following researchers, teachers, and postgraduate students of social work will be heard at the summer school: Professor Stanley L. Witkin from the University of Vermont, U.S.; Professor Johanna Hefel from Vorarlberg University of Applied Sciences, Austria; Professor Sandra Tsang from the University of Hong Kong; and Professor Marjaana Seppänen and researcher Enni Mikkonen from the University of Lapland.
After the week of lectures, the participants take a field trip to Utsjoki and Helsinki. In Utsjoki, the summer school participants learn about Northern culture and lifestyle as well as the challenges faced by social workers and services in the North. In addition to lectures, the trip involves visits to places such as the Sámi cultural centre Sajos, Siida, and the municipalities of Lapland. The other trip is made to Helsinki and Porvoo, where the participants visit social services organizations.
This spring, the International Summer School in Social Work will be attended by 85 participants from around the world, including the United States, Germany, Austria, Lithuania, and Hong Kong. It is carried out by the subject of Social Work at the University of Lapland in cooperation with the University of Vermont.
