Guest lecture on China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its Implications in the Arctic

On Tuesday 26 September, the Northern Institute for Environmental and Minority Law (NIEM) of the Arctic Centre will be hosting a guest lecture by Nengye Liu, Senior Lecturer at the Adelaide Law School, University of Adelaide, Australia. The topic of the lecture is China’s Belt and Road Initiative and its implications on the Arctic.
The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) - the signature foreign policy initiative of Chinese President Xi Jinping is of unprecedented geographical and financial scope. The BRI potentially includes the Arctic region, especially Russia. On the other hand, China has been showing strong interest in the Arctic and its Arctic Policy is now on the pipeline.
Against this backdrop, the lecture will examine the implications of China’s BRI for the Arctic governance. It first provides an overview about the progress of BRI so far, with particular focus on the Arctic. Secondly, it discusses the interaction between the BRI and China’s emerging Arctic policy. The third part then explores China’s engagement with Arctic governance. It tends to answer the question: where and to what extent could China shape Arctic governance through economic (BRI) and diplomatic tools.
The guest lecture is open for the public – NIEM welcome scholars, PhD and graduate students, as well as others interested.
