Improving Theory-Practice Balance of Mozambican Teacher Education

10.9.2020

The Finnish Ministry for Foreign Affairs has granted funding of one million euros to a group of four Higher Education Institutions in Finland and Mozambique to improve the teacher education in Mozambique. The experts from the Faculty of Education of University of Lapland will participate in the implementation of the project.

The aim of the project is to increase the capacity of the Mozambique partner HEIs to develop and deliver teacher education that provides teacher trainees with better skills to apply learner-centred pedagogy in practice, in traditional classroom settings as well as in other learning environments. Despite the challenges caused by the on-going COVID-19 outbreak, the partners are excited to start the project and are committed to achieving the expected results even in this exceptional global situation.

The work of the group is coordinated by JAMK University of Applied Sciences. The other partners are University of Lapland and Mozambican universities Universidade Pedagógica de Maputo, Instituto Superior de Educação e Tecnologia – One World. The Project is supported by a Finnish NGO UFF with solid experience of humanitarian work in Mozambique, who contribute to the efforts of the Project as associate partners.

The project activities in University of Lapland will be led by university lecturer Outi Kyrö-Ämmälä. The project will also involve researcher Minna Körkkö, university researcher Pigga Keskitalo, university lecturer Anna-Maija Partanen, university lecturer Merja Paksuniemi and project manager Janette Peltokorpi. The full project budget is a bit over one million euros, from which University of Lapland’s part is around 268 000 euros.

The project Theory-Practice Balance in Teacher Education is funded through the Ministry’s HEI ICI Programme that supports Finland´s development policy and cooperation objectives by strengthening the capacity of HEIs in the global south. The HEI ICI Programme is administrated by the Finnish National Agency for Education.
