International Arctic Design Seminar in Rovaniemi in February

25.1.2012

The Arctic Design seminar brings together the leading researchers and entrepreneurs of the arctic area to discuss the intriguing challenges the arctic climate and location poses on design. Held as part of the Rovaniemi Design Week, the world’s northernmost design week, the seminar aims to define the term both from the viewpoints of academics and entrepreneurs.

The speakers of the Arctic Design seminar present their definition on Arctic Design on a specific viewpoint such as service design and wellbeing by Professor Satu Miettinen and sustainability by Professor Michael Hardt. Sustainability is also brought up in the presentation of Professor Anne Marchand, who presents design as a mean of empowerment and sustainable development among aboriginal communities in Quebec, Canada. We will also hear from Tuija Seipell what the million readers of The Cool Hunter expect from arctic design.

The Arctic Design seminar is the first activity of the new UArctic thematic network Arctic Sustainable Arts & Design (ASAD) and it is hosted by the Arctic Design project of University of Lapland and the Rovaniemi Regional Development Agency Ltd. The seminar is free of charge and open for public.

Arctic Design Seminar is held on Friday, 24 February 2012, at 12–17 in Lappia Hall in Rovaniemi.
